DOD SMART Scholarship Program

DOD SMART scholarship is for undergraduate, master’s, or doctoral students who are studying for a degree in any of 21 STEM-related disciplines.
The Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship-for-Service Program is an opportunity for students pursuing bachelor’s, master’s, or Ph.D. program in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines. The scholars who participate in SMART receive tuition for full time and stipends each year, as well as internships as well as assured work within the Department of Defense (DoD) upon the completion of their degree. Scholars who are SMART will be employed as civilians in the DoD after graduation. The program’s goal is to increase the number of engineers and scientists working in DoD facilities and laboratories. Graduate students and undergraduate students taking courses in any of the 21 eligible STEM fields are eligible to apply.

DOD SMART Scholarship Eligibility Requirements

Who is eligible to apply?

The SMART application period is from all through the month of August to December every year. Awards will be awarded in the spring of the next year. Examine the following requirements to make sure you’re qualified to apply for this life-changing chance.
All applicants must:

  • an individual who is a person who is a citizen of United States, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, or United Kingdom at time of the application
  • Aged 18 or more on August 1, 2022.
  • A minimum of one year of funding prior to the date of graduation (which commences on the start date of the program),
  • The ability to complete at minimum at least one internship in the summer (multi-year scholar only)
  • willing to take on post-graduation work in the DoD,
  • A student who is in good standing , with an average total GPA in the range of 3.0 on an 4.0 scale.
  • seeking a technical undergraduate or graduate degree in any among the 21 STEM disciplines listed below.
  • You are able to submit an academic transcript for the fall of 2021 from an accredited regionally-based US institution, OR be pursuing a graduate degree from an accredited regionally US university or college.

Active duty military personnel who want to apply to this scholarship SMART Scholarship must be separated or in terminal leave on or by August 1 2022 in order to qualify. Reserve or National Guard members are eligible to apply. Current ROTC participants with a planned service commitments are not allowed to apply.

What is STEM?

The program is focused on students who are pursuing fields which are crucial to the national security operations that are part of the Department of Defense (DoD). Here is a listing of SMART’s 21 STEM approved disciplines. These are umbrella disciplines . Specific applicant specialties or fields of study can belong to one or more of the disciplines listed on this list.
Be aware that not-technical degrees, such as arts, management or humanities, aren’t approved or financed by SMART.

What you must be aware of:

They are awarded for a minimum period of 1 year, and up to five years of funding in accordance with the degree requirements. It is a single commitment. For every year of scholarship funding the student commits to work for the duration of a year as a civilian employee of DoD as a civilian employee. DoD for a year as an civilian.
Undergraduate students

  • Are currently enrolled in an accredited regionally U.S. college or university
  • It is required to submit the fall 2021 (or earlier) college transcript by the conclusion of the term.
  • AP courses are not eligible for college credit

Graduating applicants

  • Are currently or enrolled in an accredited regionally U.S. college or university or waiting for notification of admission
  • If you are awaiting admission to the university, you must be accepted to be admitted to the fall 2022 semester.
